What is On-Page SEO vs. Off-Page SEO: The "Linda" A-to-Z Guide (2025).
This is not another “textbook definition.” This is the “A-to-Z” “Linda” guide to the 3 Pillars of SEO. We will “deep dive” what is on-page SEO, what is off-page SEO, and what is local search engine optimization for the Nigerian market.
The “Cinematic” Opening (SOP 17)
It’s 2:00 p.m. in Ikeja, Lagos 🇳🇬.
A “Hustler”—let’s call him Tunde—has just launched his new website for his shoe business. It’s beautiful. He spent ₦300,000 on it.
To “do SEO,” he stuffs the homepage with 100 keywords: “Best shoes in Lagos, buy shoes in Lagos, cheap shoes in Lagos…”
He then pays a guy on Fiverr ₦50,000 to “build 10,000 backlinks.”
He leans back and waits for Google to rank him #1.
He is invisible.
Now, let’s go to Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭.
A “Linda”—let’s call her Amina—is also launching her shoe website.
- First, she builds her “shop foundation” (Technical SEO).
- Second, she merchandises her “storefront” (On-Page SEO) with a helpful blog post: “The Top 5 Shoes for Rainy Season in Lagos.”
- Third, she earns her “reputation” (Off-Page SEO) by getting one real link from a top Lagos fashion blogger.
Tunde (the “Hustler”) spammed the system. Amina (the “Linda”) built a complete, trustworthy asset.
Who do you think actually ranks #1?
The “Personal E-E-A-T” Intro (SOP 1)
My name is Mohammed Shehu Ahmed. When I started in 2011, I was Tunde.
I was a “Hustler.” I only focused on “Off-Page SEO.” I thought if I just “blasted” my site with thousands of spammy backlinks, I could trick Google.
I was wrong. My sites got penalized.
I had to learn the “Linda” secret the hard way: SEO is not one thing. It is a 3-part system. You cannot just build backlinks (Off-Page) to an “empty” shop (bad On-Page).
This “Spoke Post” is my “A-to-Z, corner-to-corner” deep dive into the 3 Pillars of SEO. We will master what is on-page SEO, what is off-page SEO, and the most important one for Nigerian businesses, what is local search engine optimization.
This is the core of our “Mega-Pillar” on [Link Up] $\to$ What is SEO Optimization.
The “Hustler” vs. “Linda” (The “3 Pillars” Mindset)
This is the core difference in mindset.
- The “Hustler” (The “One-Trick” Pony):
- Mindset: “SEO is just backlinks.” Or “SEO is just keywords.”
- Action: He only does one of the three pillars. He “stuffs” keywords (bad On-Page) or “buys” spam links (bad Off-Page). He completely ignores his “Technical” foundation.
- Result: His “asset” is a “house of cards.” Google sees a spammy “reputation” pointing to a useless “storefront” built on a swamp. He fails.
- The “Professional” (Linda) (The “System Builder”):
- Mindset: “SEO is a system of On-Page + Off-Page + Technical.”
- Action: She builds all three pillars at the same time.
- She builds her “shop” on a fast, secure foundation (Technical SEO).
- She merchandises it with helpful, keyword-optimized content (On-Page SEO).
- She earns a great reputation in the “market” (Off-Page SEO).
- Result: She builds a fortress. Google sees a great reputation (Off-Page) pointing to a helpful storefront (On-Page) built on solid rock (Technical). She wins.
💡 The “Linda Quote Moment” (SOP 18)
“A ‘Hustler’ tries to scam one pillar of SEO. A ‘Linda’ builds all three pillars into an unbeatable asset.”
— Mohammed Shehu Ahmed>
Part 2: The “A-to-Z” Deep Dive: What is On-Page SEO?
This is Pillar 1. This is your Storefront.
What is On-Page SEO?
On-Page SEO is the practice of optimizing all the content ON your website for your target customer and Google.
- The “Balogun Market” Analogy:
- You have a shop in Balogun Market, Lagos 🇳🇬.
On-Page SEOis your merchandising. - Is your shop sign big, clear, and helpful? (Your Title Tag & H1 Heading)
- Are your aisles clearly labeled? (Your H2/H3 Headings)
- Is your product information helpful? (Your Content)
- Do you point customers from “Aisles 1” to “Aisle 2”? (Your Internal Links)
- Are your pictures clear? (Your Image Alt-Text)
- You have a shop in Balogun Market, Lagos 🇳🇬.
A “Hustler” just throws all his products on the floor. A “Linda” merchandises her shop so the customer can find what they want.
The “A-to-Z” On-Page SEO Checklist (How-To)
This is your action plan.
1. “Linda” Content (The “Asset”)
- “Hustler”: 100 words of spam (“Buy shoes Lagos…”).
- “Linda”: A 2,500-word helpful article (like this one). This is the foundation of
what is on-page SEO. You must have helpful content. - [Link Down] $\to$ Cluster 3:
What is SEO Content Writing?
2. “Linda” Keyword Placement (The “Signage”)
- Focus Keyword: e.g., “buy wedding shoes in Lekki”
- “Linda” Action: You must place this exact keyword naturally in 4 “power” locations:
- SEO Title Tag (e.g.,
Buy Wedding Shoes in Lekki: The Ultimate Guide (2025)) - H1 Heading (Your one main page title)
- The First 100 Words (Your “Cinematic” opening)
- At least 2-3 H2/H3 Headings (e.g.,
Where to Buy Wedding Shoes in Lekki)
- SEO Title Tag (e.g.,
3. “Linda” Image Alt-Text (The “Accessibility”)
- “Hustler”: Uploads
IMG_4567.jpg. Google has no idea what this is. - “Linda”: Uploads
wedding-shoes-in-lekki-nigeria.jpgand sets the Alt-Text:- Alt-Text:
A 'Linda' bride wearing white wedding shoes in Lekki, Nigeria.
- Alt-Text:
- Why? This helps visually impaired users and tells Google exactly what the image is about.
4. “Linda” Internal Links (The “Sales Assistant”)
- “Hustler”: Has a “dead-end” page. The customer reads… and then leaves.
- “Linda”: Always gives the reader a next step.
- “Linda” Action: At the end of her blog post on “wedding shoes,” she links [Link Down] $\to$ to her product page for “White Heels.” She guides the customer from information to purchase.
Part 3: The “A-to-Z” Deep Dive: What is Off-Page SEO?
This is Pillar 2. This is your Reputation.
What is Off-Page SEO?
Off-Page SEO is the practice of building your website’s authority and reputation based on signals that happen OFF your website.
- The “Reputation” Analogy:
On-Page SEOis your beautiful shop in Accra 🇬🇭.Off-Page SEOis your reputation in the Makola Market.- Do other trusted shop owners (other websites) recommend you?
- This “recommendation” is a Backlink.
A “Hustler” pays 1,000 strangers (spam sites) to “recommend” him. Google knows they are fake.
A “Linda” earns 1 real recommendation from a trusted source (like BellaNaija or MyJoyOnline).
One “Linda” backlink is 1000x more powerful than 10,000 “Hustler” backlinks.
The “A-to-Z” Off-Page SEO Checklist (How-To)
1. “Linda” Backlinks (The “Endorsement”)
- Goal: To earn links from high-authority sites.
- “Hustler” (Black Hat): Buys 5,000 links from
Fiverr. This will get you penalized. Do not do this. - “Linda” (White Hat): She earns them.
- “Linda” Action: She writes her 2,500-word “Linda” asset (from Part 2).
- She emails it to 5 real bloggers in Nairobi 🇰🇪 or Lagos 🇳🇬.
- The “Linda” Pitch: “Hi, I saw your post on ‘Lagos wedding trends.’ I just wrote the ultimate guide on ‘how to buy wedding shoes in Lekki’ and thought your readers would love it. Feel free to reference it!”
- The blogger links to her helpful guide. She has earned one “world-class,” authoritative backlink.
2. “Linda” Brand Mentions (The “Chatter”)
- What it is: Google sees when people talk about your brand… even if they don’t link!
- “Linda” Action: When your brand (
Amina's Fashions) is mentioned onTwitter,LinkedIn, or in aTechCabalarticle, Google sees it and says “Hmm, this brand is relevant.”
Part 4: The “Pan-African” Deep Dive: What is Local SEO?
This is Pillar 3. For 90% of businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, this is the MOST IMPORTANT PILLAR.
What is Local Search Engine Optimization?
Local SEO is the practice of optimizing your website to be found by customers in a specific geographic area.
- The “Linda” Analogy:
On-Page SEOis your shop.Off-Page SEOis your reputation.Local SEOis your Google Map Pin.
- It’s how you win the “near me” search (e.g., “restaurants near me” in Osu, Accra 🇬🇭 or “plumbers near me” in Abuja 🇳🇬).
A “Hustler” ignores this. A “Linda” knows that her local customer is her best customer.
The “A-to-Z” Local SEO Checklist (How-To)
1. Google Business Profile (GBP) (Your “Second Website”)
- This is NON-NEGOTIABLE.
- “Hustler”: Doesn’t have one. He is invisible on Google Maps.
- “Linda”: Has a 100% complete Google Business Profile.
- “Linda” Action:
- Go to
google.com/businessand claim your free profile. - Verify it: Google will mail you a postcard (or call you) to your shop in Kano 🇳🇬 to prove you are a real business.
- Optimize it (A-to-Z):
- Name:
Amina's Fashions (NOT "Amina's Fashions Best Shoes in Lagos") - Address: Your exact, real address.
- Hours: Your real hours.
- Photos: Upload 30+ “Linda” photos (your shop, your team, your products).
- Posts: Add weekly updates (like a “mini-blog”).
- Q&A: Answer customer questions.
- Name:
- Go to
2. Local “Citations” (Your “Digital Directory”)
- What it is: A “citation” is a mention of your business’s Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) on other local websites.
- “Hustler”: His NAP is inconsistent. (e.g., “Amina’s Fashions” on one site, “Amina Fashions Ltd” on another). This confuses Google.
- “Linda”: Her NAP is 100% consistent everywhere.
- “Pan-African” (Pro) Action: Get your consistent NAP listed on:
- Nigeria 🇳🇬:
VConnect,BusinessList.com.ng,Naija Yellow Pages - Ghana 🇬🇭:
Yellow Pages Ghana,GhanaWebDirectory - South Africa 🇿🇦:
Brabys,Ananzi - Kenya 🇰🇪:
Yellow Pages Kenya
- Nigeria 🇳🇬:
3. “Linda” Reviews (Your “Social Proof”)
- “Hustler”: Has 0 reviews. Or he buys 50 fake 5-star reviews (Google knows and deletes them).
- “Linda”: Asks every happy customer to leave an honest review.
- “Linda” Script (via WhatsApp): “Hi, [Name]! Thank you for your purchase. If you loved your dress, would you mind taking 30 seconds to leave us an honest review on Google? It really helps our small Lagos business.”
- “Linda” Pro Move: She replies to every review (good or bad).
Part 5: On-Page vs. Off-Page vs. Local: Which is Most Important?
This is the final “Linda” lesson.
- A “Hustler” asks: “Which one do I need?”
- A “Linda” knows: “You need all three, but you start with On-Page & Local.”
The “Linda” 3-Month Plan:
- Month 1 (The Foundation):
- Fix your Technical SEO (fast hosting, SSL).
- Build your Google Business Profile (Local SEO).
- Write your first “Linda” Blog Post (On-Page SEO).
- Month 2 (The Merchandising):
- Write your second “Linda” Blog Post (On-Page SEO).
- Get your first 10 Google Reviews (Local SEO).
- Build your first 5 Citations (Local SEO).
- Month 3 (The Reputation):
- Write your third “Linda” Blog Post (On-Page SEO).
- Use that post to earn your first Backlink (Off-Page SEO).
SEO is a system. You must build all three pillars.
Part 6: Community Poll & Engagement
This is how we all learn together.
“Reader Reflection Prompt” (SOP 17)
💡 Try this: Google your exact business name right now. Do you own the “Google Business Profile” box on the right side? Is it 100% complete with photos and reviews? If not, that is your #1 “Linda” mission.
Interactive Poll (SOP 23)
Part 7: The “Ultimate” What is On-Page SEO FAQ
(This is the Step 13: Technical SEO (FAQ Schema))
1. What is On-Page SEO vs. Off-Page SEO? (The Simple Analogy)
Answer: What is On-Page SEO is your shop (everything you control on your site, like your content, titles, and images). What is Off-Page SEO is your reputation (everything off your site, like backlinks from BellaNaija or reviews). A “Linda” knows you need a great shop (On-Page) before you can get a great reputation (Off-Page).
2. What is Local Search Engine Optimization? (And is it part of SEO?)
Answer: Yes. What is Local Search Engine Optimization is a part of SEO. It’s a combination of all 3 pillars, but focused on a specific area (like Lagos 🇳🇬 or Accra 🇬🇭). Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the most important part of Local SEO. For 90% of Nigerian SMEs, Local SEO is the most important type of SEO.
3. What is SEO and its types?
Answer: The “main types” of SEO are the 3 Pillars:
- On-Page SEO: Optimizing your content (titles, text, images).
- Off-Page SEO: Building your reputation (backlinks, brand mentions).
- Technical SEO: Fixing your foundation (site speed, mobile-friendliness, security).
- A successful “Linda” strategy must include all three.
Part 8: Final Thought from Mohammed
(This is the Step 12: “Brand-Building” Final Thought”)
When I started in 2011, I was a “Hustler.” I thought what is SEO was just one thing. I thought it was just backlinks. I spent months trying to “trick” Google, and all I got was a banned website.
I didn’t understand the “Linda” lesson: You cannot build a “reputation” (Off-Page) for a broken, empty “shop” (On-Page & Technical).
This 2,500-word post is not just about “types of SEO.” It’s about a system.
It’s about first, building a “world-class” shop (On-Page).
It’s about second, making sure it’s fast and secure (Technical).
And it’s only then that you can earn a “world-class” reputation (Off-Page).
You’ve now conquered the “Hustler” trap of “one-trick” SEO. You are no longer just a “Hustler” buying links. You are officially a “Linda” with a 3-Pillar plan.
“Reader Voice” Invitation (SOP 16)
I’d love to hear from you. This is my “A-to-Z” blueprint for the 3 Pillars.
Which of the 3 Pillars (On-Page, Off-Page, or Local) have you neglected the most?
